Richard Scarry nació en Boston, Massachusetts, en 1919. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial trabajó al servicio del ejército como dibujante de mapas; luego se trasladó a Nueva York, la ciudad perfecta para los artistas, donde pronto consiguió grandes éxitos como ilustrador.
