Barry Briggs has a dream to lead his cricket club, set in the English fictional village of Buttingford Smedley, to respectability. The reality, however, is less glorious — his team can't win a match, the match teas are in chaos, and his teammates are more interested in ale and arguments than cricket. Armed only with misplaced optimism and a homemade cricketing philosophy (his infamous SADFUC manifesto), Barry battles the small and large disasters that befall the club any given Saturday.
From the ball that lands in a prize-winning Stilton cheese, to the kangaroo courtroom farce that follows a mid-match brawl, Barry's season is one long lesson in resilience. Along the way, he deals with disobedient players, distraught local cheese makers, allegations of deceit involving a bet gone wrong, a catering calamity, and the chaos of organising a family fun day.
As Barry navigates the inevitable ups and downs, including an on-field fracas and a humiliating showdown in a local newspaper, he also finds solace in the unwavering support of his family.
