A Catholic Bishop shot in the rump. An eleven year old Sylix boy running from his abusive Residential School with his cousin and grandfather. Devil is ordered to track and arrest them in the vast Okanagan Highlands.
With his stallion Rascal as his sole companion, Devil must come to terms with what sort of man he truly is as he drags his heels on his mission. Like his placer miner friend Carmi Joe says; "Seems like you're just kicking that can down the road hoping it'll hit a stray rock and bounce off into the weeds."
On the lonesome trail, Devil finds himself haunted by the ghosts of his years as a sniper in the Great War, and begins to doubt his identity as a lawman. Disgusted by a law that makes being a free indian boy a crime and broken-hearted by the mess he's made courting the woman he loves, Devil ponders a life-changing decision on the long trail.
But out there in the endless forest a cold-blooded killer awaits him, and Devil will have to decide if he is a cop or an outlaw.

McClelland serves up three dimensional characters in his novels. Not your slick pulp cutouts you find in too many novels, but people with soul, haunted by their own demons and driven to make their way through life the only way they know how. McClelland's characters bleed when they're cut, aren't the toughest hombres on the landscape, and his female characters sweat, swear, and are as tough as their male counterparts when pushed too far; and they all love like tomorrow doesn't exist.
