On lui prête des négriers littéraires dont Auguste Maquet pour l'écriture de ses livres. Malgré ses succès, il aura des dettes et vendra le château de Monte-Cristo aux enchères. On peut retrouver ses cendres au Panthéon, depuis 2002.
