Applications of Crispr-Cas9 in Translational Research

This book is a compendium of chapters focusing on the application of CRISPR-Cas 9 in translational research. The initial chapter provides the brief history and basic mechanism of the CRISPR/Cas 9 system and factors influencing its efficacy for treating human diseases and in the field of agriculture, synthetic biology, and environmental sciences. The book also examines the recent advances in the CRISPR-Cas9 technology to improve crop productivity towards achieving the zero hunger goals. Further, the book discusses the recent developments and therapeutic applications of CRISPR-cas9 in gene therapy and the applications of CRISPR/Cas9 in situ correction of disease-causing mutations, loss-of-function mutations, or gain-of-function mutations in various genetic and neuromuscular diseases. It also explores the emerging opportunities of CRISPR-Cas9 in diagnosing and treating infectious diseases caused by bacterial, viral, protozoan, and other parasites. Dr. Jawed Iqbal is presently working as a Ramalingaswami Fellow and Assistant Professor in the Multidisciplinary Centre for Advanced Research and Studies (MCARS), Jamia Millia Islamia. Previously, he has done his Ph.D. from the J. N. Medical College, A.M.U. Later on, he carried postdoctoral research from C.M.S., Illinois, U.S.A. He has a patent on the Portable Detection System for sensitive estimation of analytes. His research interest is on understanding the viruses and host innate responses and the applications of CRISPR/Cas 9 in the healthcare system. He has recently developed a mobile phone integrated point of care diagnostic device for detecting COVID-19, named CASSPIT (Cas13 Assisted Saliva-based & Smartphone Integrated Testing), and is currently under transfer to the diagnostic company for manufacturing at the mass level. He has published more than 50 research articles in various peer-reviewed international journals of repute.
