Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920) was one of the greatest Spanish writers of the 19th century. He was a member of the Royal Academy, a lawyer by training, and an active political figure, and was elected to the Cortes. His literary output includes approximately eighty novels, as well as plays and short stories. He gained particular fame with his epic 46-volume work, "Episodes Nacionales," which traced the history of Spain from the Battle of Trafalgar to the fall of the Revolution of 1868-1874. Galdós's style is distinguished by a combination of journalistic incisiveness, historical accuracy, and a lively narrative dynamic, making his novels models of Spanish realism.
The novel "Cádiz," part of the "Episodes Nacionales" cycle, covers events from February 1810 to May 1811, one of the most dramatic periods of the Napoleonic Wars in Spain. By this time, French troops had already captured almost the entire country, but partisan detachments operated in the rear, and the city of Cádiz remained the only stronghold of freedom. Here, resistance forces were concentrated, and all those who refused to accept Napoleon's rule flocked there. In Galdós's depiction, Cádiz appears not only as a fortress resisting siege but also as a symbol of the resilience of a people whose determination and courage proved stronger than military might.
Cádiz is not simply a historical chronicle, but a novel about national character, about unity and resistance, about how, in times of trial, a new political and spiritual consciousness is born.
