C. Saintin (real name Joseph Xavier Boniface; 1798-1865) was a French novelist, playwright, and one of the most prolific vaudevillians of the first half of the 19th century. His friendship and collaboration with Jean Ancelot allowed him to establish himself on the stage, and he made his literary debut with the poetry collection "The Happiness of Knowledge." He is best known for his short story "Picciola," which has been translated into many languages --and has seen dozens of editions.
The novel "Louise de la Porte," presented in this edition, is set during the final years of the reign of Louis XIII. The narrative centers on the story of the young Louise de la Porte, whose fate becomes intertwined with the French king's final passion. Blinded by her beauty, the monarch separates her from her lover and forcibly marries her to the Comte de Marillac, seeking to bring her closer to him. But his plan backfires: the pious Louise, faithful to her marriage, rejects the king's advances. Humiliated by her resolve, Louis plots harsh retribution against the young woman.
"Louise de la Porte" combines historical accuracy with the intense drama of human passions, depicting the complex character of the king and the tragic fate of a girl trapped in someone else's will.
