At a deeper level...it is clear that Murray's whole life and approach to every situation, as a senior ophthalmologist in Afghanistan and in many lands, springs from his lifelong faith. Murray was born in Shanghai, but grew up in Scotland...with a very early calling (aged 12) to be a doctor and practise abroad, wherever he was needed!
A long medical training, specialising in 'eyes' and the prevention of blindness, led to a post as Director of the NOOR Eye Institute in Kabul, Afghanistan. Afghan staff numbered 130 plus, with an international team of 25 - 30. NOOR was a superb, well-equipped 100-bed eye hospital, serving thousands of needy patients from all over the country, and also former members of the royal family...in the midst of a Soviet take-over!
Murray had many friends around the world who believed in the power of prayer and faithfully prayed for him and his family. Miracles were to follow!
Later, an appointment to the International Centre for Eye Health, London, established the Journal of Community Eye Health, for which Murray was Founder Editor. First published in 1988, copies are distributed worldwide, with health professionals in many countries now reading the Journal online.
Murray also travelled on short term consultancies, working with international organisations, such as the World Health Organization, Sightsavers, Tearfund and CBM International.
His book majors on medical adventures, prayer, and occasions where Murray had to work as a diplomat in testing situations. Unexpected challenges for an eye doctor from Scotland!
