Edmond-Adolphe de Lepelletier de Bouellet (1846-1913) was a French writer, publicist, and historian of the left-wing republican movement. A participant in the Paris Commune of 1871, he left behind remarkable accounts of its events and also created a number of works of fiction that combined history, journalism, and psychological drama.
This edition includes two of his novels, united by the theme of Napoleon's fate and the dramatic role of women and betrayal in his life.
"The Insidiousness of Marie-Louise" (also known as "The Mysteries of Marie-Louise") reveals one of the most tragic pages in Napoleon's personal history. At the height of his fame, he separated from Josephine to marry the Austrian princess Marie-Louise, but this union brought him only disappointment and betrayal. The novel shows how personal drama intertwines with the fall of the empire.
"The Emperor's Spy" transports the reader into the atmosphere of hidden intrigues, diplomatic games, and secret missions that accompanied Napoleon throughout his reign. The protagonist is an agent forced to balance loyalty and betrayal, duty and personal feelings. Through the prism of his fate, the dark side of high politics is revealed-a world of shadows, conspiracies, and mortal dangers.
The two novels complement each other, blending documentary sources with fiction. In them, Napoleon emerges not only as a military leader and emperor, but also as a man beset by betrayal, in whose life female figures and the hidden forces of history become fateful symbols of his greatness and fall.
