Read on as "Chattel" describes how a man in desperate straits is offered a lifeline by his Indian neighbour. At the opening of "Indenture By Other Means", the three year agreement that had seen Robert Samuels become the servant of his neighbour, Navya Chakraborty, in order to keep his home at the end of that period, has finally reached its end... Or has it...? Confident that the levels of domestic and physical dependency she has induced in the older man will make him receptive to a more long-term and binding arrangement, Navya misjudges that confidence and allows herself to make Robert an offer that is not only rejected but declined in total...
