Georg Moritz Ebers (1837-1898) was a German writer, historian, and orientalist. His long-standing studies of ancient languages --and archaeology combined with a vibrant literary talent, giving his historical novels a special place in world literature. He traveled extensively throughout Egypt, gathering material for his works and novels, and succeeded in capturing the spirit of bygone eras in artistic form.
The novel "Bride of the Nile" transports the reader to Egypt in the mid-seventh century-a time of turmoil, when the country endured drought, famine, and disease under the rule of Arab conquerors. Amid the disasters and anxieties of Memphis, the priests decide to revive the ancient rite of sacrificial marriage with the great river, hoping to appease the forces of nature.
