Renaissance Monarchs at War

The Battle of Pavia took place in northern Italy on 24 February 1525. Its outcome profoundly affected the course of European international relations for the rest of the sixteenth century. King Francis I of France led his forces at the battle and was captured amidst the greatest slaughter of French nobles in war since Agincourt.

Dr Glenn Richardson is Professor of Early-Modern History at St Mary's University, Twickenham in London and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His research focuses on European kingship, and sixteenth-century international relations, warfare, royal courts and cultural patronage. His previous books include Wolsey (2020), The Field of Cloth of Gold (2013 and 2020) and his first was Renaissance Monarchy: The Reigns of Henry VIII, Francis I and Charles V (2002).
