Eugénie Grandet

Eugénie Grandet est la fille unique d-un tonnelier de Saumur très riche mais très avare et qui fait vivre sa famille dans une quasi-pauvreté. Elle est naïve, docile et, comme sa mère, tyrannisée par son père. Elle tombe amoureuse de son cousin Charles. L-amour lui donne alors la force d-affronter son père. Cependant Charles doit partir aux Indes pour tenter d-y faire fortune. Il lui promet de l-épouser à son retour. Mais - Inclus dans la partie de La Comédie Humaine intitulée Scènes de la Vie de Province, ce roman, un des plus célèbres de Balzac, montre avec réalisme la vie sociale d-une ville de province (Saumur) vers 1830 et peint, à côté d-un avare dévoré par sa passion, un attachant portrait de femme.

Honoré de Balzac was born into a family which aspired to achieve respectability through its industry and efforts. His father, born Bernard-François Balssa, was one of eleven children from an artisan family in Tarn, a region in the south of France. In 1760 he set off for Paris with only a Louis coin in his pocket, intent on improving his social standing; by 1776 he had become Secretary to the King's Council and a Freemason (he had also changed his name to the more noble sounding Balzac, his son later adding-without official recognition-the nobiliary particle: de). After the Reign of Terror (1793-94), François Balzac was despatched to Tours to coordinate supplies for the Army.
