Die Reformen des Beweisantragsrechts aus § 244 StPO durch das "Gesetz zur effektiveren und praxistauglicheren Ausgestaltung des Strafverfahrens" (2017) und das "Gesetz zur Modernisierung des Strafverfahrens" (2019)

'The Amendments to Section 244 of the German Code of Criminal Procedure through the -Act to increase the efficiency and practicality of criminal proceedings- (2017) and the -Act to modernise criminal proceedings- (2019) and their impact on the defendant': The thesis explores the 2017 and 2019 reforms of section 244 of the German Code of Criminal Procedure. The thesis concludes that the two reforms did not significantly advance their stated objectives to accelerate criminal proceedings and to decrease the workload of first instance criminal courts. However, contrary to what had been criticised by opponents of the amendments, the thesis finds that the rights of the defendant to actively participate in the proceedings were not substantially curtailed.

Janina Ellsäßer ist Richterin auf Probe in Berlin. Während ihrer Tätigkeit als Proberichterin hat sie unter anderem an einer Jugendstrafkammer des Landgerichts Berlin gearbeitet. Sie hat Jura an der Universität zu Köln und an der Humboldt Universität Berlin studiert. Ihr Referendariat hat sie im Landgerichtsbezirk Neuruppin absolviert und war am dortigen Landgericht, bei der dortigen Staatsanwaltschaft, im Bundeskanzleramt, einer großen Wirtschaftskanzlei in Berlin sowie bei 'Victim Support Europe', einer Nichtregierungsorganisation mit Sitz in Brüssel, tätig. Zudem war sie mehrere Jahre als akademische Mitarbeiterin an einem zivilrechtlichen Lehrstuhl beschäftigt.
