"À la recherche du temps perdu" (in English, "In Search of Lost Time" or "Remembrance of Things Past") is a monumental novel by the French author Marcel Proust. The novel is divided into seven volumes, and the first volume is titled "Du côté de chez Swann" ("Swann's Way").
The novel is known for its intricate and introspective exploration of memory, time, and the human experience. It follows the life of the protagonist, Marcel, as he embarks on a journey to recapture lost moments and memories of his past. As Marcel delves into his memories, he explores themes of love, art, society, and the passage of time.
"À la recherche du temps perdu" is considered one of the most significant works of modernist literature and is celebrated for its complex narrative style and profound psychological insights. It has had a profound influence on the development of the novel as an art form.

Portrait

Proust was born on 10 July 1871 at the home of his great-uncle in the Paris Borough of Auteuil (the south-western sector of the then-rustic 16th arrondissement), two months after the Treaty of Frankfurt formally ended the Franco-Prussian War. His birth took place at the very beginning of the French Third Republic, during the violence that surrounded the suppression of the Paris Commune, and his childhood corresponded with the consolidation of the Republic. Much of In Search of Lost Time concerns the vast changes, most particularly the decline of the aristocracy and the rise of the middle classes, that occurred in France during the fin de siècle.
