The King Without a Throne

Maurice Montaigu (1831-1898) was a French novelist and translator, the author of numerous historical works in which he meticulously recreated the events and characters of transformative eras. His work combines an interest in the dramatic destinies of historical figures with a fascination with the everyday and cultural details of bygone centuries.
This volume includes two novels dedicated to the era of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.
"The King Without a Throne" tells the tragic story of the Dauphin of France, Louis-Charles, the son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, who went down in history as Louis XVII. Orphaned and a prisoner of revolutionary France, the boy becomes a symbol of lost monarchy and unfulfilled hopes.
"The Empress's Cadets" tells the story of young noble officers who, despite the collapse of the old order, dedicated their lives to military service. Following the armies of France on long and bloody campaigns, they embody loyalty, honor, and the desire to preserve traditions amid radical change.
