Dondinus Papiensis Op

The first edition and translation of a little-known work of medieval political theory, dedicated to one of the more controversial popes of the Middle Ages. It argues for the papacy's central role in secular and church politics on theological, philosophical and historical grounds. A detailed introduction relates the work to 14th century history.

Patrick Nold studied history at the University of Michigan as an undergraduate and completed his DPhil at the University of Oxford. After postdoctoral positions in Oxford and Toronto, he was a Humboldt scholar at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica in Munich. He has also held fellowships at Villa i Tatti (the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies) and at the American Academy in Rome. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of History at the University at Albany (SUNY).
