L'humanité a commencé, comme chaque homme commence, par ne posséder aucune connaissance, hors la conscience de soi et la perception du monde. Cela lui suffisait, comme cela suffit encore aux peuples sauvages, ou, parmi nous, aux travailleurs ignorants, pour savoir se diriger dans la nature et parmi les hommes autant qu'il était nécessaire pour vivre. Pourquoi désirer plus ? Il semble que l'humanité n'aurait jamais dû sortir de cette heureuse ignorance, ni, pour citer Jean-Jacques, se dépraver au point de se mettre à méditer. Mais cette ignorance, c'est un fait qu'autant que nous pouvons savoir jamais l'humanité n'a eu proprement à en sortir, car jamais elle ne s'y est renfermée...

Simone Weil (1909-1943) was one of the twentieth century's most profound thinkers. In her early years, she was known for her brilliant and biting social commentary, and especially for the year she spent working in three Paris factories.
