From Crickets to Dragonflies

Training and equipping the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces (RVNAF) is by far the largest military development program that the United States has ever undertaken. This paper will examine the training and equipment provided to the VNAF during this effort by dividing the years 1955-1972 into three periods based upon the nature of the conflict and the assistance provided to the Vietnamese. In order to understand the decisions made with regard to VNAF development, background information is provided for each period. Because of the large scope of the US effort to train and equip the Vietnamese, the focus of the analysis is on the fighter and helicopter programs as well as the development of training institutions to establish VNAF self-sufficiency.
