He has taught at Fudan University in China, McMaster University in Canada, and DePaul University in America, where he has lectured on topics such as Classical and Modern Chinese languages, Classical and Modern Chinese Literature, Chinese Cinema, Chinese Calligraphy Theory and Practice, and Chinese-English/English-Chinese Translation Theory and Practice. He has published translated works including "A Selection from the Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties," "Selected Words of Contemporary Chinese Prose," "Selected Works of Classical Chinese Prose," "One Hundred Classic Chinese Poems," "Chinese Classic Culture Going Global Series: Essays Volume Three," and "In Other Words," among others. His translated works have been presented as national gifts to foreign countries and have been used as university textbooks. His translation principles are "accuracy," "fidelity," and "cohesion." He has also published poetry collections, including "Selected Poems by Xu Yingcai," "One Hundred Three-Line Poems by Xu Yingcai," "Poetic Sense of the South," and "Inspiration from Nature." His poetic philosophy centers around simplicity and beauty of language, vivid and poetic imagery, sincerity of expression, and substance in content. He strives to create enduring artistic moods and endeavors to make his works shine. Yingcai Xu is the founder and president of the Chinese Poetry Society and the founder and chief editor of the bilingual Chinese-English poetry journal "Poetry Hall " in print.
