The author's boyhood in the Argentine pampas is chronicled in this book. The children in his family were warm and affectionate, and because they received their early education at home, they had lots of freedom to explore the natural environment around them. He had a keen eye for observation of birds and other animals because of his early love of the natural world. As he claims that many of the magnificent natural locations he knew as a boy are now permanently lost due to the expansion of agriculture, an elegiac tone is set.
