Poirot trades luxury for the muddy English countryside to save a man so unlikeable that no one wants him to be innocent.

Mrs. McGinty, an elderly widow, has been brutally murdered. All the evidence points to her tenant, James Bentley, a withdrawn man struggling with financial difficulties who has been sentenced to hang.

However, convinced that Bentley's clumsiness is incompatible with the cold-blooded nature of the crime, Superintendent Spence turns to Hercule Poirot for help. The famous detective leaves behind his comfortable London life for a run-down guesthouse in the small rural village of Broadhinny.

There, he uncovers the clue everyone else has overlooked: shortly before her death, Mrs. McGinty clipped a newspaper article about four women who vanished without a trace. With the help of his friend, novelist Ariadne Oliver, Poirot discovers that this seemingly peaceful English village is far from idyllic.

Nacida en Torquay en 1891, Agatha Christie recibió la típica educación victoriana impartida por institutrices en el hogar paterno. Tras la muerte de su padre, se trasladó a París, donde estudió piano y canto. Contrajo matrimonio en 1914 y tuvo una hija, pero su matrimonio terminó en divorcio en 1928. Dos años después, durante un viaje por Oriente Medio conoció al arqueólogo Max Mallowan, con quien se casó ese mismo año; a partir de entonces pasó varios meses al año en Siria e Irak, escenario de Ven y dime cómo vives y de alguna de sus novelas policiacas, como Asesinato en Mesopotamia o Intriga en Bagdad. Además del gran éxito de que disfrutaron sus célebres novelas, a partir de 1953 ganó celebridad con las adaptaciones teatrales de sus novelas en el West End londinense. En 1971 le fue concedida la distinción de Dame of the British Empire. Murió en 1976. After her father's death, she moved to Paris, where she studied piano and singing. She married in 1914 and had a daughter, but her marriage ended in divorce in 1928. Two years later, during a trip to the Middle East, she met the archaeologist Max Mallowan, whom she married that same year; from then on, she spent several months a year in Syria and Iraq, the setting for Come, Tell Me How You Live (Andanzas 50, now also in the Fábula collection) and some of her detective novels, such as Murder in Mesopotamia and They Came to Baghdad. Besides the great success of her famous novels, starting in 1953, she gained fame with the theatrical adaptations of her novels in London's West End. In 1971, she was awarded the distinction of Dame of the British Empire. She died in 1976.
