After her father's death, she moved to Paris, where she studied piano and singing. She married in 1914 and had a daughter, but her marriage ended in divorce in 1928. Two years later, during a trip to her Middle East, she met archaeologist Max Mallowan, whom she married that same year; thereafter, she spent several months a year in Syria and Iraq, the scene of Come, Tell Me How You Live: An Archaeological Memoir and some of her detective novels, such as Murder in Mesopotamia or Intrigue in Baghdad. In addition to the great success enjoyed by her famous novels, from 1953 onwards she gained fame with the theatrical adaptations of her novels in London's West End. In 1971 she was awarded the distinction of Dame of the British Empire. She died in 1976.
