The origin of Sick Machines is a very clear concern about a very current issue. The stories refer, in different ways, to our obsession with so-called "artificial intelligences" and other digital technologies, and to the many dark sides of this renewed myth: that of machines that "are going" to replace us, and that are already interfering in our lives, our thinking, and even our bodies. Although the myth is old, the global sensation caused by generative artificial intelligence models (ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, or any other) has grown thanks to the threats, not always veiled, that their owners or creators have disseminated through the media. Their technologies are inevitable, they say; whoever doesn't adapt and submit to them will be dragged down, erased from the workforce and probably from the world altogether.
Alberto Chimal (Toluca, México, 1970) es escritor y profesor de escritura creativa. En 2002 obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Cuento y en 2014 el Premio de Narrativa Colima, otorgados por el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes de su país; en 2013 su novela La torre y el jardín fue finalista del Premio Internacional Rómulo Gallegos; en 2019 su libro para niños La Distante recibió el premio internacional de la Fundación Cuatrogatos; en 2021 su novela La noche en la zona M ganó el premio internacional del Banco del Libro, y en 2024 obtuvo el Premio Internacional FILEM a su trayectoria literaria. Otras de sus obras son las novelas Los esclavos (2009) y La visitante (2022); una veintena de libros de cuentos, de los que el más reciente es Las estancias secretas (2024); los guiones de las películas 7:19 (2016), dirigida por Jorge Michel Grau, y Confesiones (2023), dirigida por Carlos Carrera; "Funeral", una historia ilustrada dentro de la novela gráfica Batman: El Mundo (2021), y el podcast de ficción La señal (2025). Textos suyos se han traducido a una docena de idiomas y han aparecido en antologías internacionales. Vive en la Ciudad de México; con su esposa, la escritora Raquel Castro, mantiene un canal de divulgación literaria en YouTube. En Páginas de Espuma ha publicado Los atacantes (2015) y Manos de lumbre (2018).
