Dr. Thorne is a novel written by Anthony Trollope, published in 1858. The book is set in the fictional county of Barsetshire, England, and revolves around the life of Dr. Thomas Thorne, a physician who lives in the small town of Greshamsbury. The story begins with the introduction of the wealthy Gresham family, who are facing financial troubles due to their extravagant lifestyle. The eldest son, Frank, is in love with Mary Thorne, the niece of Dr. Thorne, but their love is forbidden due to Mary's low social status. As the story progresses, Dr. Thorne becomes embroiled in the Gresham family's financial troubles and tries to help them avoid bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Frank's father, Squire Gresham, is determined to marry him off to a wealthy heiress, despite Frank's love for Mary. The novel explores themes of love, class, and social hierarchy in Victorian England. It also delves into the complexities of family relationships and the struggle between duty and personal desires. Dr. Thorne is considered one of Trollope's most popular works and is part of his Chronicles of Barsetshire series. It has been adapted for television and film several times and remains a beloved classic in English literature.Dr. Thorne belonged to a family in one sense as good, and at any rate as old, as that of Mr Gresham; and much older, he was apt to boast, than that of the De Courcys. This trait in his character is mentioned first, as it was the weakness for which he was most conspicuous. He was second cousin to Mr Thorne of Ullathorne, a Barsetshire squire living in the neighbourhood of Barchester. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
