Arthur L. Burnett, II, MD, MBA, FACS, is the Patrick C. Walsh Distinguished Professor of Urology and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He is the recipient of the 2022 Hugh Hampton Young Award, which is the most prestigious honor given by the American Urological Association. This award was given for his ground-breaking advances in male sexual health, including his advocacy, diversity, and humanitarian contributions to the science and medicine of the urologic field. Dr. Burnett is an internationally acclaimed urologic surgeon and one of the preeminent doctors in his field whose active research laboratory is credited with discovering the chemistry of penile erection, which led to the development of Viagra. His patented devices and techniques are used to address the full range of male sexual dysfunctions, including those resulting from prostate cancer treatments. Dr. Burnett was the lead urologic surgeon on the team that performed the first-ever penis/pelvis transplant. Dr. Burnett's patients range from world leaders to men of every age, background, and ethnicity. He has given more than 450 lectures nationally and internationally, and frequently travels to the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa, South America, and China to treat underserved communities. Dr. Burnett has authored or co-authored more than 500 original peer-reviewed articles, scientific reviews, editorials and book chapters, and his work has appeared in such prominent journals as Science, Nature Medicine, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Urology, Urology and Journal of Andrology.
