Although history remembers Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, the author was also an accomplished athlete and amateur boxer who saw boxing as the ultimate test of character and discipline. His authority in the "sweet science" was such that, in 1909, he was even invited to referee the historic heavyweight world championship between Jack Johnson and James Jeffries. Autor y doctor en medicina escocés, Arthur Conan Doyle es conocido principalmente por su serie de novelas protagonizadas por el detective Sherlock Holmes, cuya aparición supuso una verdadera revolución del género criminal. Además de las protagonizadas por Holmes, sus obras dedicadas al Profesor Challenger, así como sus incursiones en géneros incipientes como la ciencia-ficción o el género histórico, tuvieron una gran difusión y relevancia, convirtiéndose en verdaderos clásicos de la literatura popular. Conan Doyle estudió medicina en Edimburgo mientras escribía sus primeros relatos, actividad que alternó con su trabajo posterior como médico en Aston y Portsmouth. Es en esta última ciudad donde escribe el que sería su primer relato de éxito 'Estudio en Escarlata' (1887) y que supuso la primera aparición de Holmes, a la que seguirían ocho más. Además de la literatura y la medicina, Conan Doyle fue un activista en favor de la justicia y de ciertas causas internacionales como la independencia del Congo. También son conocidas sus intervenciones como abogado y su defensa del Espiritismo y de la existencia de hadas, temas que se pueden adivinar en sus libros de Challenger y en algunas de las aventuras de Holmes.
