In "The Badislavs," we witness the escape of an archaic clan through a landscape that seems to have emerged from the Apocalypse, inhabited by angels, demons, and creatures whose existence transcends all logic. "The Circus" returns us to 1960s Bucharest, transformed here into a living organism. A child--Mircea himself--attends a show where giant beetles, carpets hiding state secrets, and girls with butterfly wings merge into a tale of memory and revelation. Finally, "The Wedding" drags the reader to Lake Como, during the wedding of Count Witold Csartarowsky: a coven of mythological figures, delusions, and memories where the boundaries between time, dream, and matter dissolve forever.

Mircea Cărtărescu nació en Bucarest en 1956. Poeta, narrador y ensayista, está considerado por la crítica literaria el más importante escritor rumano de la actualidad. De su obra poética, que cultivó a lo largo de toda la década de los ochenta, destaca El Levante (1990; Premio de la Unión de Escritores Rumanos), que Impedimenta recuperó en 2015 en una versión especialmente preparada por el autor. Parte de su producción lírica fue publicada en español bajo el título de Poesía esencial (Impedimenta, 2021). Cărtărescu dio el salto a la narrativa en 1993 con el volumen de relatos Nostalgia (Impedimenta, 2012; Premio de la Academia Rumana), que se abre con 'El Ruletista' (publicado de modo independiente por Impedimenta en 2010). Le siguió Lulu (1994; Impedimenta, 2011), que le valió el Premio ASPRO. Su trilogía Cegador, formada por El ala izquierda (1996; Impedimenta, 2018), El cuerpo (2002; Impedimenta, 2020) y El ala derecha (2007; Impedimenta, 2022), supuso su consagración literaria y le ha procurado premios como el Von Rezzori y el Thomas Mann. Impedimenta también publicó en 2013 su volumen de cuentos Las Bellas Extranjeras (2010; Premio Euskadi de Plata de Narrativa) y, en 2016, El ojo castaño de nuestro amor un volumen de relatos autobiográficos que sirve como nexo para entender el conjunto de su producción literaria. Entre sus últimas obras publicadas cabe destacar Solenoide (2015; Impedimenta, 2017), que ganó el L.A. Times Book Prize y el Dublin Literary Award 2024; el volumen de relatos Melancolía (2021, de próxima publicación en Impedimenta) y su última novela, Theodoros. Mircea Cărtărescu ha recibido otros premios literarios a lo largo de su carrera, entre ellos el Premio Formentor de las Letras en 2018, el Premio FIL de Literatura en Lenguas Romances en 2022 y, en 2024, el Premio Internacional Mondello.
