Assessing the impact of household waste disposal practices on water quality of Womba River. A case study from Sawla Town, Ethiopia

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Environmental Sciences, Arba Minch University, language: English, abstract: The general objective of the study was assessing the impacts of household's poor waste disposal problem on the water quality of Womba River in Sawla town.
A waste refers to any material or product that has been considered useless by the owner and needs to be discarded or has been discarded. Solid waste is any organic or inorganic materials generated from various human activities which have been considered unwanted or useless therefore disposed treated or untreated.
On the other hand, the term household's solid waste management has been defined differently by different writers and Authors. For instance, defined it as all activities that seek to minimize the environmental, aesthetic and human health impacts of households solid waste.
A much more comprehensive definition of has been provided by, which stated that solid waste management is a discipline associated with the control of generation, storage, collection , transfer and transporting, processing and disposal of it. So, it is a manner in accordance to the best principle of public health, economics, engineering, conservation, aesthetics, and other environmental conservations responsive to public health. Inherent in this definition, solid waste management is a processes which includes waste generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing and disposal of wastes in accordance to the principles of household's solid waste management. The rapid urbanization and growth of urban population that has been taking place during the 20th century virtually transformed the world in to communities of cities and towns. These developments imposing challenges on environment in which most of them have to be addressed at international level. Among those environmental challenges, municipal waste management is a critical one. This is because as long as humans have been living in settled communities, solid waste generation has been an unavoidable in both developed and developing nations.

I was born in 1976 in Gofa zone, Demba Gofa Woreda, Dacha Dambala kebele; it is located at Southern Ethiopian Region. I attended my primary school (1-5) and (5-8 at Kusti and Jinka Elementary Schools from 1983-92 E. C. After completing elementary education level, I joined Jinka Secondary School for grades 9-10 from 193-94 E.C. Having completed the 9th and 10th grade, I returned to Sawla secondary and Preparatory School for grades (11-12) in the years 1996-1997 E.C. After completion of preparatory school (11-12 grades) just I took ESLCE exam in 1997 E.C. at Sawla secondary and preparatory school. Then I joined Jima University and I earned my first dgree in History in 2000 E.C. After having my first dgree, I have served as school Teacher, Supervisor, expert, office head from 2000-2008 E.C at different places like, Basketo high school, Demba Gofa and Sawla Town administrations. In 2008-2009 for two years, I also joined Arba Minch University, department of Geography and Environmental Studies for further education and I earned M.Sc in Geography. After having my second dgree, I have served as head of Sawla Town Mayer's main adviser. However, finally in 2012 E.C I have joined Arba Minch University. To date I am lecturer at AMU Sawla Campus. Education: I had my first dgree from Jimma University BEd (Bachelor of Education Dgree) with History in 2009 G.CI get my M.Sc. dgree from Arba Minch University on Geography and Environmental Studies ( specialization in Environmental Change Management) in 2017 G.C
In addition, I also took various trainings and workshops at national and international levels like research for sustainable development, community development, integrated watershed management conferences and etc. Expertise:Before joining higher education Institution, I have worked in different institution at various positions like, high school Teaches, cluster supervisor, woreda education expert as well as office head I have also been worked in both civil & academic institutions, people with diverse cultural backgrounds, and academic profiles. This enabled me to have good communication and interpersonal relationship with leaders, collogues, students and campus communities. This also let me to be educator, trainer and researcher.
