Freddie Mercury remembered by Peter Freestone, his personal assistant and close companion during Queen's rise, global fame, and Mercury's final years. Peter Freestone was Freddie Mercury's personal assistant for the last 12 years of his life. He lived with Mercury in London, Munich, and New York, and was by his side when he died. In this book, Freestone paints a striking portrait of the man behind the myth. The result is a compelling, entertaining, and ultimately, very touching memoir. From their first meeting at the Biba department store in the early 1970s - when Queen was still unknown - Freestone witnessed Mercury's rise and with it the generosity, the excess, and the celebrity friends who came and went. From the famous names - including Elton John, Kenny Everett, Elizabeth Taylor and Rod Stewart - to the shadowy army of lovers, fixers and hangers-on, Peter Freestone saw them all play their part in the tragi-comedy that was Freddie Mercury's life. First published in 2000, Freestone's best-selling account of his life alongside the singular icon is the closest fans will get to an autobiography of Mercury.
Peter Freestone is an English author, speaker, and former personal assistant, best known for his long friendship with Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Freestone, nicknamed "Phoebe," trained in classical music and costume design, and worked at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden before joining Queen's crew in 1979. From 1979 to Mercury's passing in 1991, he served as Freddie's PA - handling day-to-day life, stage costumes, and companionship. Since then, Freestone has written about his experiences, authoring Freddie Mercury: An Intimate Memoir by the Man Who Knew Him Best. He continues to share memories worldwide through talks, interviews, and HIV/AIDS awareness projects.
