The story of Deborah Feldman's escape from the New York Satmar Hasidic community to Berlin became a bestseller and formed the basis of the TV series Unorthodox. After leaving the house, Deborah thought that she would find freedom and happiness, but this did not happen. The reader of this book meets her a few years later - lost, cut off from the earth, roots and everything that for many years gave her strength in the struggle for freedom. She thinks a lot about her grandmother, who was the source of love and beauty in her life. The path that the grandmother took tells Deborah that she needs to get to the homeland of her ancestors in order to come to terms with the past that she tried so hard to forget. She is drawn like a magnet to Europe, to the land that her community considered "scorched", and now Deborah is no longer running away - she is returning.
