Postcolonial perspectives in the art world and in cultural education are booming, for example in the debate about the Humboldt Forum Berlin. However, a lot of times these perspectives are rather practices of recitation than practices of reception. In this context, deeper debates around and with theories of postcolonialism would be urgently needed, for example, to expose the impositions of dominant Eurocentric exhibition and mediation practices. In this regard, the contributions to this volume evaluate the responsibilities of art from an explicitly postcolonial perspective, focusing on the "double binds" that pervade the discipline. In doing so, they both expose discriminatory practices in the field and promote an (auto)critical theory development.
María do Mar Castro Varela ist Professorin für Allgemeine Pädagogik und Soziale Arbeit an der Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin. Sie ist u.a. Gründerin und Mitglied des bildungsLab* und Vorsitzende des Berliner Instituts für kontrapunktische Gesellschaftsanalysen (BI:KA). Ihre aktuellen Forschungsschwerpunkte umfassen Fragen der Ethik, Kunst, Trauma, Emanzipation und Wissensproduktion.
Leila Haghighat ist Kulturschaffende in Berlin und promoviert zum double bind in sozial engagierter Kunst an der Akademie der Künste in Wien. Im Fokus ihrer Untersuchung stehen Praxen einer Ästhetik der Fürsorge und deren möglichen Übertragung auf Kunstinstitutionen. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind sozial engagierte Kunst als Beziehungsarbeit, Solidarität, (Stadt-)Räume, Institutionen und Repräsentation aus einer postkolonialen Perspektive.
