Émile Gaboriau wurde am 9. November 1832 in Saujon-en-Saintonge, Frankreich, geboren und starb am 28. September 1873 in Paris. Er war ein französischer Schriftsteller und Vorreiter des Detektivromans. Seine Hauptfigur Inspektor Lecoq gilt als Vorgänger von Arthur Conan Doyles berühmtem Detektiv Sherlock Holmes.
