Portrait

Gabrielle Vincent, the children's literature pseudonym of Monique Martin, was born in Brussels in 1928. A talented painter, she began her artistic career working primarily in black and white mediums such as ink, charcoal, and pencil. In the 1960s, she transitioned to colour, experimenting with watercolour, pastel, and oil paints. Known for her avant-garde style, Gabrielle became a world-renowned children's illustrator, best known for her beloved Ernest et Célestine series. Throughout her career, she received numerous prestigious awards, and her work continues to resonate with readers around the world. Gabrielle Vincent passed away in September 2000, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of nearly 10,000 pieces of art created over 50 years.
