Coming Out of Partition

Exploring the category of 'refugee women' as it emerged in the events of the Bengal Partition, the book claims that they have not only played an important role in shaping women's movement but also have been responsible for the radical reorientation of social lives in Bengal as they rebuild and reshaped their lives in alien conditions.

Gargi Chakravartty, a History (Hons) graduate of Presidency College, Calcutta, completed her PhD thesis on 'Gandhi and Hindu-Muslim Relations (1919-1929)' from University of Calcutta as a Gandhi Centenary Research Fellow. She taught at Maitreyi College, University of Delhi, for thirty years. Her books include Gandhi: A Challenge to Communalism, P.C. Joshi: A Biography, Charting a New Path: Early Years of National Federation of Indian Women (co-authored with Supriya Chotani), and People's 'Warrior' Words and Worlds of P.C. Joshi (editor).
