In The Kings of Israel and Judah, George Rawlinson offers a sober historical reconstruction of the Hebrew monarchy, tracing the fortunes of Saul, David, Solomon, and the divided kingdoms through political conflict, prophetic admonition, dynastic collapse, and imperial conquest. Written in lucid Victorian prose, the book combines narrative clarity with apologetic scholarship, situating biblical history alongside the wider ancient Near Eastern world of Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon. Rawlinson, Camden Professor of Ancient History at Oxford and brother of the Assyriologist Henry Rawlinson, brought to Scripture the habits of a classical historian and the confidence of a nineteenth-century scholar newly attentive to archaeological and cuneiform discoveries. His broader work on ancient monarchies shaped his conviction that biblical accounts could be read not merely devotionally but historically, in conversation with inscriptions, chronicles, and comparative evidence. This volume is recommended to readers interested in biblical history, Victorian historiography, and the early scholarly effort to reconcile sacred narrative with ancient imperial records. Though marked by the assumptions of its age, it remains a disciplined and engaging account for those seeking a historically minded introduction to Israel's royal past.
