This book investigates the history of the Southwestern territory of the United States, its inhabitants and their cultural texts. It is an interdisciplinary work that concentrates on the cultural interpretation of the Chicana literary discourse in terms of Chicana feminism, La Raza political advocacy and socio-cultural interactions between the Latino/Latina and Anglo-Saxon cultures. Subsequently, the Author analyzes the issues of reciprocal relationships between the Chicanas' class, ethnicity, gender and culture. Methodologically the book combines a literary discourse analysis with American Cultural Studies and Gender Studies.
The Author: Grażyna Zygadlo is Assistant Professor at the Department of American Studies and Mass Media at the University of Lódź (Poland). Apart from Mexican-American literature and Chicano/Chicana Studies her other academic research interests focus on issues of gender politics and American ethnic identities, as well as on problems of representation and the contemporary American popular culture. In 2004 she co-edited a volume of essays on gender and culture: Gender across Cultures.
Contents: Chicano/Chicana Studies - Ethnicity, Race, Gender and Class - Intersectionality - Mexican (Im)migration - Chicano/Chicana Diaspora in the USA?
