In the Days of the Comet, a novel by H. G. Wells originally published in 1906, describes how the "green vapours" released by a comet on its close encounter with our planet bring about a change to life on earth. Though one of Wells's lesser-known works, it is one of his most ambitious.

H. G. Wells (1866-1946) is one of the founders of modern science fiction, and still widely regarded as one of its greatest writers. In addition to science fiction, Wells published works of history, politics, social criticism, general fiction, and even a textbook on biology.
