Hertz Minsker, Jewish emigrant, self-proclaimed intellectual and true charlatan, lives at the expense of real estate magnate Morris Kálisher, a childhood friend. An inveterate seducer, he is married for the fourth time to the singer Bronie and has an affair with Minne, Morris's wife, in the same beards of their respective spouses.
