The good Doctor Elberg did not understand why he had to take down the sign outside his office that he had been so proud to put up himself.

Why did the country of France, who had done everything possible to help him succeed, now cast him aside and leave him almost hopeless with despair? He couldn't bear it when, arrested and confined to the Drancy camp, he discovered scores of innocent children, the youngest of which, born in the camp, was only 14 days old. Why so much hate? And why the children? Something had to be done.

A network was formed around Drancy. The children were taught how to mimic the symptoms of the illnesses the Germans feared the most in the hopes of getting sent to the Rothschild hospital. There, doctors in the know would quietly send them away to the homes of families who had volunteered to care for them. Jean-François Elberg never met his father.

During the investigation of this essay he discovered a man who risked everything to save others, a man who unfortunately never got to se his own children grow up.
