Debugging is a skill. This is how it works. Nobody teaches you how to debug. You learn it the hard way, bug by bug, over years of trial and error. Johannes Kuhlmann spent those years shipping video games, where the bugs are brutal and the deadlines don't move, and turned what he learned into a workflow you can follow the next time something breaks: Reproduce, Probe, Examine, Fix. Each phase of the workflow comes with numbered, battle-tested strategies you can apply in any language and at any level of the stack, from a misbehaving UI to a race condition that only appears in production. Worked examples drawn from real shipped software show each strategy in action, including the failures and dead ends that are part of every honest debugging session. You'll learn how to: - Reproduce intermittent bugs quickly and reliably, because a bug you can't reproduce is a bug you can't fix- Write bug reports that shorten the path to a fix instead of starting an argument- Narrow thousands of lines of suspect code down to the failure point- Confirm the actual root cause before you change anything, so the bug stays fixed
Johannes Kuhlmann is the Studio Technical Director at game development studio Fishlabs, where he started as an Engine Developer. Through his career, he has helped develop games for a wide variety of systems, including Chorus, Saints Row, Valheim, and more. After learning how to fix bugs the hard way, he wanted to share his expertise with his fellow programmers – the result of which is The Debugging Handbook.
