The second and third editions are revised versions of previously published stories and the fourth and fifth are long enough to be called novellas. The title is taken from 1 Corinthians 13:12, a deliberate misquotation of the passage which describes humanity as perceiving the world "through a glass darkly".

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was an Irish writer renowned for his contributions to the genre of gothic fiction. Born in Dublin, he studied law at Trinity College but soon turned to writing, where he found his true calling.
