The book was originally written as gift to Alice Liddel, the daughter of one of Carroll's friends. Carroll had told the story to Alice during a rainy-day boat trip up a river. Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), an English author, mathematician, logician, and photographer. His Alice books remain among the most influential works of literary nonsense.
