Luigi Pirandello was born into a wealthy family. He completed his higher education in Palermo, Rome, and Bonn. He later returned to Italy to teach literature at the Rome Normal School for Girls, a position he left when his growing reputation allowed him to dedicate himself exclusively to his writing career. Pirandello began writing poetry and short stories, but he is best known for his work as a playwright. In his works, he poured all his philosophical ideas into his works and explored human psychology through popular characters in a novel theatrical language that left behind traditional conventions. Already a renowned author, he was appointed director of Rome's Teatro d'Arte in 1925 and a member of the Royal Academy of Italy in 1929. In 1934, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his "bold and ingenious renewal of dramatic and stagecraft." Although Pirandello's image was slightly overshadowed by his ties to Mussolini's fascism, his brilliant career places him as the most important playwright of interwar Europe and one of the great innovators of 20th-century theatre, whose avant-garde vision remains relevant today.
