Magnum: A World of Photography

How are world-famous images created? Why are they published and why do they end up in an archive later? In the opening exhibition Magnum: A World of Photography, FOTO ARSENAL WIEN deals with distribution and archiving strategies using the example of the world-famous agency Magnum Photos. Insights into undiscovered and otherwise secret working processes from contact sheets to vintage exposures to darkroom works provide insight into the world of photography. On display are over 300 exhibits of contact sheets, slide positives, vintage photographs and books - from Robert Capa, Dennis Stock, Inge Morath, René Burri to Susan Meiselas and Martin Parr.

Felix Hoffmann ist Ausstellungsmacher, Bild- und Kulturwissenschaftler und Gründungsdirektor des Zentrums für Fotografie und Lens Based Media FOTO ARSENAL WIEN und Direktor der FOTO WIEN. In diesem Bereich hat er 2023/24 Ausstellungen u.a. mit Beate Gütschow, Mari Katayama und die Gruppenausstellung 'Crossing Lines. Politics of Images' kuratiert. Von 2005 bis 2022 war er Chefkurator der C/O Berlin Foundation, wo er für Ausstellungen, Programme und Strategiezuständig war. Er hat Bücher herausgegeben und Texte verfasst, kuratierte zahlreiche Ausstellungen darunter Nan Goldin (2009), Robert Mapplethorpe, Peter Lindbergh (2011), Gordon Parks (2014) oder Ren Hang und Elfie Semotan (2018), sowie Themenausstellungen wie 'unheimlich vertraut. Bilder vom Terror' (2011), 'Das letzte Bild. Fotografie und Tod' (2018) oder 'Send me an Image. From Postcards to Social Media' (2020).
