Mary Borden worked for four years in an evacuation hospital unit following the front lines up and down the European theater of the First World War. Born in Chicago, Mary Borden (1886-1968) set up a hospital unit on the Western Front during the First World War, for which she was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French Government. She went on to have a distinguished career as a writer, publishing a number of novels and her memoir of her war experiences, The Forbidden Zone (1929).
