During his childhood he lived in "La Mineral" neighborhood in Mayagüez Puerto Rico and has many fond memories of that time. He says they are his best childhood memories.A lover of food and sharing cultural stories, he often finds that the best way to introduce someone to his culture is through their stomachs. In the summer months, Rafael "El Quijote" becomes "El Piragüero" and loves to introduce visitors to the NC State Fairgrounds, to his Icy Puerto Rican treats. He is the founder and director of the El Quijote Festival (2015), an annual seven-month statewide collaborative festival that commemorates the Spanish writer and literary giant Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra and the 400 years of "Don Quixote", two books that changed his life.He lives in Raleigh, North Carolina with his wife of over 30 years, Michelle.
