He is not alone in the trying. Sister Perpetua, household liaison and reluctant keeper of secrets, chooses complicity over duty and pays for it in ways she will spend years still paying. Wren, a boy with nothing to offer Goldie but loyalty, offers it anyway, entirely without calculation, the way children do before the world teaches them better. And above them all, the Cardinal watches his household with the specific, terrible patience of a man who has never once needed to raise his voice to get exactly what he wants. First Wing is a slim, aching gothic fable about the machines people build to keep the ones they love safe - and the quieter, more devastating machinery of institutions that were never built to let them stay that way. It is the first of three short prequels leading toward Fourth Wing, tracing Dr. Osric Lane through every child he tried, and failed, and tried again, to save before a girl named Vesper finally became the one signature nothing - not wire, not wax, not love - could hold.
