This is the first volume of the first complete English translation of the extant correspondence of René Descartes, covering the period 1619 to 1638. Translations are provided of both sides of the correspondence, including letters written to and from Fermat, Huygens, and Mersenne.

Portrait

Roger Ariew is Distinguished University Professor at the University of South Florida University. He was previously a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Chicago. His principal interest concerns the relations between philosophy, science, and society in the early modern period. He is the author or co-author of four books and editor and translator of Descartes' Philosophical Essays and Pascal's Pensées. He has been awarded multiple fellowships and research grants by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and research grants by the National Science Foundation, and the American Council for Learned Societies.
Erik-Jan Bos is a post-doctoral researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is a specialist in the life and works of René Descartes and his impact on Dutch philosophers and scientists in the seventeenth century. He has been awarded fellowships by the American Council for Learned Societies, and the Dutch Research Council.
