Beschreibung

This is a heart-wrenching letter of love and hate addressed to an absent father -- a bohemian, an alcoholic, a man both adored and unforgettable. It is a novel shaped like a scar, written from that precise place where love and resentment become indistinguishable. Mila is fifty years old and six months sober; she lives in Paris, staying in other people's homes and looking after other people's dogs. She scrapes by with precarious jobs caring for elderly strangers, all while a deepening solitude closes in around her. Her life has been forged through hard knocks, sliding inexorably toward alcohol, humiliation, and a kind of erosion that threatens to erase her very self. At the center of it all has always been one man: her father. By turns tender and irresponsible, radiant and toxic, he dominated her entire existence; his shadow lingers over Mila even in his absence. A bohemian journalist and alcoholic with a beautiful voice, he would return from his travels with poems in his pockets -- and it was he who taught her to write. Yet he loved books more than his daughter, and he died -- just as she had feared -- with all his words left unspoken, never revealing the very thing she needed most to hear. Wild, moving, and brutally lucid, this novel establishes Tatiana Tibuleac as one of the most powerful voices in contemporary European literature. It is a book about intoxication and shame, about family legacy and the impossibility of starting over. It is about what a daughter still owes a father, even when all that remains of him is a note tucked between the pages of a book.

Portrait
